Program Description

Mathematics is the study of patterns in the structure of space and time. It is developed through the use of abstraction and axiomatic deductive reasoning, from counting, measurement, calculation, and the study of the shapes and motions of physical objects. As such, while mathematics is an indispensable tool in the natural sciences and engineering, mathematics also exists as an essential branch of philosophy.

Numeracy and quantitative reasoning are cornerstones of California culture and this is codified in the curriculum at COD, where maths are an essential part of the core general education transfer curriculum. At least one course with a prerequisite of Intermediate Algebra is required of all students expecting to transfer to California State University or the University of California.

When $a \ne 0$, there are two solutions to \(ax^2 + bx + c = 0\) and they are $$x = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}.$$
